Cytology: A Cellular Experience, was a show I did in 2008 at the ViaHealth Archives Gallery. They are ink and watercolor. I tried to show the beauty under the microscope.

A Whole Other World
These look like creatures from another world. Do they walk or slither? Can they see or feel? Instead of fingers they have little projections. Brings you back to the world of make-believe. What do you think it is and what does it do?

It is actually and electron micrograph of cells. It is hard to grasp how tiny they are and how many make up your body. There are so many different kinds with so many different jobs. They can not live without each other.
Picture
Breath Easy

These cells line up in formation to do their job. They sweep out dirt with their beautiful long cilia. We make them up with beautiful pink mascara and light blue cytoplasm and they show us how well they work.
Picture
Multinucleated Macrophage

These cells clean up any unwanted debris. I suppose in any system there is unwanted stuff; bacteria, viruses and dust. Wish I could get these to come clean my house!
Picture
Ugly Cells

These cells may look cool but don't let them fool you, they are bad. They are our enemy, we need to stop them before they spread and take over. We try our best but sometimes they elude us. We hope to some day conquer them before they even form.
Picture
Glands

Look at the beautiful formation. Don't be scared of falling in these holes, they will take you on a beautiful ride through the body. I picture a soft, bouncy ride down a slide. One could be weightless, floating and bouncing and having a great time.
Picture
Bouquet

These cells look like a bouquet coming out of a vase or maybe even fireworks shooting into the sky.
Picture
HPV

The human papilloma virus may be a disease of our past. See the large cavitations and enlarged nuclei that are replicating the virus, if not stopped they can turn ugly. With the new vaccine the cells can stop the virus themselves.
Picture
Glanndular Cells

These cells look like they are dancing in a circle. We are watching their beautiful, graceful moves from above. Can you hear the music?
Picture
Crystalized

There is a balance of chemicals in your body. Things get out of wack and you feel out of wack. One can have urine bejeweled with crystals. There are many different kinds and different shapes. They are very pretty.
Picture
Squamous Epithelium

These cells form layers to protect. You will have to fight each one to get through. They are there to defend.

Verruca Vulgaris

A wart. Not so nice when you get one but neat looking under the microscope.
